What Are Eavestroughs and what Purpose do they Serve?
An eavestrough or rain gutter is a narrow channel or trough which collects and diverts rainwater shed by the roof. The main purpose is to protect a building’s foundation by channeling water away from its base. The gutter also helps to reduce erosion, prevents leaks in basements, and protects paint or stained surfaces by reducing exposure to water. The water is collected by the eavestrough and fed down a downspout from the roof edge to the base of the home where it is either discharged or collected for later use.
How do I Protect My Eavestrough or Gutters and Downspouts From Debris?

How Often Should I Have My Eavestrough and Drainage System Maintained?
After a hard winter where we have many freeze / thaw cycles, corners and seams that had a perfectly good seal can open and cause leaks. This can adversely affect parts of the building beneath. The expansion and contraction from the ice is the primary culprit. If gutters and downpipes are in good shape, a good quality seal can do the trick. It’s recommended that the old seal is removed and the metal is cleaned with a wire mesh scrubber for the best adhesion for new materials being applied. As part of the regular check-up, the correct slope should be maintained to prevent additional weight from sitting water that can cause the eaves to pull away and fall off the building and make sure all the downpipes are free of debris and properly flowing.
In some extreme situations LeafGuards and filters may still need to be cleaned occasionally depending on the type and degree of foliage surrounding the building. Regular maintenance should also be on the to do list as a priority if you live in these beautiful surroundings. An ounce of prevention can go a long way.
